Domondon: Gearing for action

THE newly-elected city mayor Benjamin Magalong attended last Tuesday the second quarter meeting of the City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (Cadac) at the Multi-Purpose Hall of City Hall, together and sitting beside our outgoing Mayor Mauricio Domogan.

The occasion was the second or third time that this writer has personally seen the new mayor, this time without his long time PNP uniform and dressed in simple civvies but still sporting an intense albeit stoic façade that bares a deep intelligence all the more made obvious by his unassuming silence.

He attended the Cadac meeting having in mind to observe, assess and evaluate the status of the city’s policy making group tasked with charting the over-all direction of the war on drugs in Baguio. And he did just that. He listened.

Newly-elected mayor Magalong has not yet taken his oath as the new chief executive of the city and yet from the time that he won during the recently held elections, he already began engaging various sectors of the city, even his opponents to the position, just to listen to them and solicit their ideas, suggestions and recommendations.

Not only that but he also gave marching orders to the members of his soon to be staff to start requesting informal talks and discussions with the officers and employees of his soon to be city hall family. All to learn more about the new environment that will be his second home for the next three years.

From this writer’s own observation the new city mayor is indeed being true to form and as a former general in the PNP well-schooled in military tactics and strategy, he has already made advance preparations on how to tackle the various concerns and challenges that is daily being confronted by the city. The new mayor will most assuredly have his hands full when he finally goes into action addressing the problems of the city but if his ability to listen is any indication of how he intends to act then the 41,482 who chose him were not wrong.

If the plethora of challenges confronting the city constitutes a war that has to be fought and won then our new mayor Benjamin Magalong has done his homework in preparing for the battles to come. This writer is reminded of a saying from that great Chinese military general Sun Tzu who wrote, “The general who wins the battle makes many calculations in his temple before the battle is fought. The general who loses makes but few calculations beforehand.”

This writer is not personally acquainted with the new mayor but come July 1st he will be the new father of the city and a lot will be expected from him. For us city government employees and his subordinates we can do no less than throw our full support behind him and in whatever he does to advance the betterment of the City of Baguio and its people. His cause will become our cause.
