CUSTARDS and pies are staple dessert in any Filipino gathering, potluck events, or even during a merienda break. One fine example of this fondness over custards and pies is the fluffy egg pie that most Filipinos love.

Egg pies are basically made up of eggs, milk, sugar, butter, and flour. Very basic culinary ingredients but the secret really lies on how everything is whipped up. Personally, egg pies are a real go-to food when I am looking for something sweet to clear off my palate after eating a full meal.

In Davao City, there’s a particular bakeshop famous for its egg pie. During our online poll to seek out Dabawenyos’ favorite egg pie in the city, the name of this bakeshop never failed to make it to the comment section.

But Davao City is a huge city. Just around the corner there could be other bakeshops and sweet treat shops selling egg pies that other Dabawenyos would love to go back to again and again. One only needs to look hard and pay attention. We did just that and came up with three egg pies from different bakeshops in the city.

We asked help from Real Confections Owner and Baker Chieb Rechie Elizalde, Ginoong Davao 2019 Kyle Emmanuel Gaite, and SunStar Davao Columnist Kathleen Pastrana to know which of these top 3 egg pies are the best among the best.

“Appetizing sya kay glossy ang top and then yellowish and filling. So I think they used more egg yolks and it also depends on the milk that they are using.”

“This is sweeter than eggpie #1 pero ‘yung pagka sweet niya hindi naman overwhelming na sweetness.”

“Among the three [eggpies] kay mao ni sya ang pinaka-yellowish tan-awon and excited ko kaunon iyang crust.”

In the end, Gervacio’s Bakeshop was decided to have the best egg pie in the city. This is mostly because of its custard which the judges found to be the tastiest of the three. Aside from this, they noticed how the crust is chewy and not crumbly. Ginoong Davao Kyle Emmanuel Gaite particularly liked how the crust is chewy and tasty at the same time.

Lifestyle columnist Kathleen Pastrana was also very specific of her sweetness preference when it comes to egg pies. Although Egg Pie #3, which is Gervacio’s Bakeshop, is sweeter than the two other egg pies on the list, she said it was not overwhelmingly sweet and suited her taste.

Baker and Real Confections owner Chieb Rechie Elizalde liked how bright yellow the custard of Gervacio’s Bakeshop was. He said this shows how they are generous with the use of milk and egg yolk.

Gervacio’s Bakeshop has branches along C.M. Recto Avenue, Jacinto Extension, and Lanang.
