PUJ operators can get dashcams despite penalties

THE Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) has set aside for now the collection of pending penalties for traffic violations of public utility jeepney (PUJ) operators, so it could install dashboard cameras (dashcams) in their units.

CCTO operations chief Francisco Ouano did not divulge the number of operators who had pending penalties.

The CCTO purchased 1,000 dashcams for P15 million. Its personnel have installed 500 dashcams in PUJ units since Monday, June 10, 2019.

Outgoing Mayor Tomas Osmeña first endorsed the project, saying dashcams could be helpful in solving crimes.

Ouano decided not to require the operators to present their travel line before dashcams could be installed in their PUJ units.

An operator, he said, only has to present the certificate of registration, official receipt and franchise of his PUJ.

Ouano said several PUJ operators did not get a travel line, although they operate in Cebu City, since securing the document would reveal their pending traffic violations.

He said the PUJ operators are not yet off the hook, as the decision to collect the penalties is up to the incoming administration of mayor-elect Edgardo Labella. (from PAC of SuperBalita Cebu/KAL)
