MOMS always get credit for raising the kids, and for good reason. To many, dads don’t seem to be programmed for hands-on child-rearing; they just wing it. But as times have changed, so have their roles. Mom and Dad can both hustle while still be able to nail this whole parenting thing.

For 34-year-old food, lifestyle and travel blogger Neil Savellon (chefbuano), his life changed forever when he became a father to nine-year-old Adriana Beatrice and seven-year-old Alessandra Ysabel. SunStar LIVE! sat down with him to pick his brain for thoughts on fatherhood, its joys and challenges.

Did you always want kids?

“Yes! Even before having my own, I’ve always loved hanging out with kids because they have their own charm and wit that make me feel happy.”

How did it feel the first time you became a dad? How did it change your life?

“I was scared and totally unprepared because there’s no ‘Becoming a Dad 101’ guide. All the wants are lessened and most of the things that I do are aligned to my kids since they are now my first priority.”

What’s your current setup and how do you make it work?

“Although their mom and I are no longer in a relationship, we remain to be good friends. This makes it easy to plan staycations with the kids which usually happens during school breaks, holidays or anytime I want, really.”

What do you love most about being a father?

“Spending quality time with my kids through playtime, teaching them how to cook, eating and swimming.”

What are the challenges that come with being a father?

“Making sure that they grow up to be kind, generous and respectful.”

What’s your parenting style?

“I know that their mother is strict so I try to be the complete opposite by spoiling them since I don’t see them often. Don’t judge me! Haha!”

What are your favorite bonding activities?

“We love swimming, eating cheese pizza, fried chicken and gelato and making pancakes for breakfast.”

Work-wise, what are you busy with these days?

“I have a full-time job. I also blog and do events hosting on the side.”

Would you want more kids?

“Yes, but maybe a few years from now.”

What’s your advice to those who also have to juggle career and family?

“Balancing work and personal life is challenging but not impossible. The trick I’ve learned is to carefully plan my days. I make sure that after work, I make time to bond with my kids and take care of myself through diet and exercise.”
