La Trinidad lauded for protecting environment

EDUCATOR and former commissioner of National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) Zenaida Hamada Pawid lauded the town of La Trinidad in Benguet for continuing the fight to protect its environment.

In her speech during the 69th Foundation Day of La Trinidad on Friday, June 14, she congratulated the town for its efforts concerning environment.

“I congratulate Trinidad for fighting the environment in Busol, Puguis,” she said.

“I congratulate La Trinidad for fighting the City of Baguio on the Balili River, filing a case and cleaning the river,” she added.

The former NCIP official lauded the town for regressing until now the land issue with Benguet State University (BSU).

Hamada added there is a need to open communication with BSU and to make the town grow with the academic institution, as in the case of Laguna and University of the Philippines (UP) Los Baños.

“Trinidad cannot write and continue its history without accepting BSU’s own very large land. It is still a continuing concern of land ownership," added Hamada.

She also reminded constituents to look back of the rich history of the town.

“Do not forget the long history of the town, it is more than the numbers of years of your foundation. The history of Benguet is 14 generations as of 1989 and at present reach up to 16 generations,” said Hamada in the local dialect.

In all the archives she added La Trinidad was called the “Kabisera de Pueblo”.

Republic Act 531 on June 16, 1950 declares La Trinidad as a municipality.

La Trinidad is a first class municipality known as the strawberry capital of the Philippines and home to two big highland vegetable trading areas, the La Trinidad Vegetable Trading Post and the Benguet Agri Pinoy Trading Center.
