Gritty UV makes it three in a row

THE ARQ Builders/University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers edged out the Cebu Landmaster/Sacred Heart School Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles in overtime, 68-65, in the high school division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) at the Cebu Coliseum on Sunday, June 16, 2019.

The Baby Lancers grabbed three offensive rebounds in the dying seconds of overtime to make up for the missed free throws en route to their straight third win in the preseason tournament.

Christian Allilin scored a three-pointer to give the Baby Lancers the lead at the start of the overtime, 65-62. UV’s Banzon made a layup after SHS-AdC’s Joey Villamor split his charities on the other end.

With UV leading 67-63, SHS-AdC got the chance to take the lead but SHS-AdC’s Mike Boniel split his free throws before teammate Tracy Dadang converted one-out-of-two from the charity stripes.

SHS-AdC trailed UV by two points with 13.3 second to play.

SHS-AdC got another chance after Danang missed his second free throw but was unfortunately called for a traveling infraction with 9.3 ticks left.

UV’s Sacayan was fouled but missed two free throws. However, Johnley Casas was there for the offensive rebound. Casas also missed both free throws with 5.1 seconds left. Luckily for UV, Sacayan got another offensive rebound to secure the win for UV. Sacayan hit one free throw for the final tally.

SHS-AdC fought back in regulation, scoring the last six points to send the game to extra time at 62-all. UV was leading 62-58 with 1:07 left in the fourth quarter before SHS-AdC put up a 6-0 run.

Bajo finished with 18, points, Sacayan added 15 and Alilin pitched in 10 for the Baby Lancers.

Boniel led the Magis Eagles with 14 points.

In the other game, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USP-F) Baby Panthers beat the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Baby Jaguars, 75-69, also in the juniors division.

Clint Ochavo and Christopher Isabelo combined for 24 points for the Baby Panthers, who rallied in the fourth quarter to turn back the Baby Jaguars. USP-F scored 29 points in the payoff period while limiting USJ-R to only 15. (RSC)
