Limpag: Coaching Education

THE Central Visayas Football Association (CVFA) will hold an Asian Football Confederation Diploma C coaching course on June 18 to 30, 2019 at the Cebu International School. The 12-day event will have 24 coaches from the three foreign coaches and seven other coaches each from the other regional FAs.

The seminar will be conducted by Aris Caslib, John Carmona and Percy Guarin. For those of you who don’t know, coach Caslib started the whole renaissance in Philippine football when he guided the men’s team to a respectable finish in the 2004 Tiger Cup.

From a “let’s hope we won’t lose by much” attitude, Caslib changed the PHL team’s mindset to “we can win this one,” and he set a series of firsts for the national squad under his term.

The seminar is part of CVFA’s goal to have all its coaches have at least an AFC C license. It’s a good move and a good plan.

Another vision is also to require coaches at a certain level to have a certain license, say License C for high school coaches and maybe License B for those in the men’s and college levels.

That way, the local FA can also help in making sure that coaches with a certain license will have the corresponding earning that matches his license.

To get there, of course, is to have as many licensed coaches in Cebu, and that is where the AFC C seminar comes in. The coaches are lucky as the course will be in Cebu and they need not travel, which was the case for seminars like this one a decade ago.

I know some coaches, especially those who have been at it for decades, scoff at licenses. Sometimes, they think, “I’ve been coaching since that instructor was a kid. Why do I need a license?” But I hope they’d take a more open approach on this one.

By the way, perhaps in future coaching courses, they’d open a few slots for parents who love to coach in the sideline. Yep, they are a dime a dozen in local tournaments, and some tend to disrupt the coaches’ gameplan.

Well, this AFC C license seminar that runs for 12 days is the perfect avenue for them to prove what they love to brag, that they are better than their stupid coach. Having no time or money to pay for the 12-day seminar shouldn’t be considered an excuse.

Heck, this seminar is just one of the many the coaches they love to criticize go through. And if they think they’re way better than the coaches that they’d bark separate instructions to their kids, then surely they’re also good enough to undergo the 12-day seminar and show the coaches how smart they are.

If they think coaching is easy and that only stupid coaches can lose a championship match, here’s the chance to put up or shut up.

I’m sure this suggestion will tickle the fancy of CVFA’s Jinggoy Roa and other coaches who have been the subject of such tirades in previous years. If you can do it better, here’s your chance.

Coaching is more than just shouting in the sidelines and this 12-day seminar will teach bossy parents the proper way and etiquette.
