Police seek more witnesses in trader’s murder in Mandaue

AN UNIDENTIFIED man opened the front door on the driver’s side of the van driven by businessman Yi Feng Guo Yang in Barangay Cubacub, Mandaue City.

The stranger then pulled a bag from Yang, but the latter resisted. Then a tug-of-war ensued, a witness told the police.

Yang was later shot dead, while his two children were wounded in the attack.

The man who stole Yang’s bag had three companions. They fled on two motorcycles.

After verifying with the Chinese consulate in Cebu City, the police learned that Yang and his two children were Philippine passport holders.

Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) Director Julian Entoma said his investigators would check the veracity of the witness’s information by interviewing Yang’s children, ages 16 and 18.

Two days after the attack happened on Sunday night, June 16, 2019, the MCPO investigators have not yet zeroed in on a definite motive behind the incident.

Entoma has urged the persons who saw the incident to present themselves to the investigators, who would want to determine if the incident was either a robbery or murder.

He said the perpetrators may have staged it as a robbery to mislead the police.

As of now, Entoma admitted that they are facing a blank wall and his investigators are waiting for Yang’s family to cooperate with them.

Superbalita Cebu visited Yang’s wake in a chapel of a funeral parlor in Mandaue City on Tuesday, June 18.

However, Yang’s family refused to grant an interview and some of his relatives got mad after the Superbalita team attempted to take a picture of the chapel’s facade.

Entoma said he understood the grief felt by the relatives. But he urged them to give their statements, including the two survivors, to the investigators at the Chinese consulate or in any other place where they could feel they are safe.

Entoma wants to know if Yang had been threatened before the attack.

The footage of Cubacub Barangay Hall’s closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera shows two of the culprits riding on a yellow motorcycle. Yang’s van follows behind.

Tailing the van is another motorcycle boarded by the two other men. The van slows down while traversing an uphill portion of the barangay road, about 50 meters from the barangay hall.

The CCTV fails to capture the actual attack, which happened about 20 meters from the upsloping road.

Police theorized that the gunmen ahead of the van may have fired the first shots.

The other culprits following the van may have been the ones who peppered the door on the driver’s side with bullets.

According to Entoma, his investigators would check Yang’s profile.

The businessman has stores in Consolacion and Barangay Basak, Mandaue City that sell household and office items.

Both establishments were closed when the MCPO personnel visited them. (From FMD of SuperBalita Cebu, KAL)
