GPS helps police trace ‘carnappers’

TWO women who allegedly stole a car that they rented were arrested by operatives of the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) 7 during an entrapment operation on Monday, June 17, 2019.

Lara Marie Rubi Mabale, 24, of Surigao del Sur and Emma Carcedo Nacorda, 45, of Barangay Busay, Cebu City are facing complaints for violating the Anti-Carnapping Law and for falsification of public documents.

Police Captain Saturnino Sedigo, HPG Metro Cebu chief, said the suspects rented the Toyota Vios of Jame Tapuyao on June 7.

The women, who introduced themselves as Emma and Marites, agreed to return the vehicle after 24 hours.

When the suspects still did not show up on June 9, Tapuyao called Mabale who he knew also as “Emma” and who he said had different excuses for not returning the vehicle.

He started to worry and reported the matter to the Talamban Police Station, whose personnel coordinated with the HPG 7.

Through the vehicle’s Global Positioning System (GPS) device, the operatives were able to locate the car in Talamban.

They learned that the vehicle was pawned to a certain Daniel Jayme Jr. for P150,000.

The police also learned that Mabale had a fake original receipt (OR) and certificate of registration (CR) made for the vehicle and registered under her name.

Between June 9 and June 17, Mabale asked Jayme to give her additional P100,000 to complete the P250,000 payment for the vehicle.

Unknown to the suspects, the vehicle was already in the custody of the HPG 7.

When the suspects and Jayme met inside a fast food joint on Gen. Maxilom Ave. on Monday for the payment, the HPG 7 swooped down on the two.

“The complainant was with us during the operation. When the complainant approached the suspects, we immediately arrested them,” Sedigo said.

He said the suspects usually rent vehicles and drive them around the city to find possible buyers.

They would have a fake OR and CR made for the vehicles to show their prospective clients that they are the owners.

On Tuesday, June 18, Tapuyao filed a complaint for violation of the Anti-Carnapping Law against the two women. (From AYB of SuperBalita Cebu, LRC)
