THE Department of Agriculture (DA)-Davao said the region will not need to worry of an oversupply of mangoes since there is enough demand to consume it.

“Diri sa region, dili gyud ta makaingon na naay oversupply kay kaya pa i-consume sa mga consumers ang kadaghanon sa supply sa market karon (Here in the region, we cannot say there is an oversupply of mangoes since the demand of the consumers can still consume the volume of supply that is in the market now),” DA-High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) focal person Arlene Seguiro told SunStar Davao Wednesday, June 19.

“Sa karon, naa ta sa peak na ang-abot ang mangga but dili ta to the point na nag-oversupply ta (This time, it is the peak harvest season for the mangoes but it is not yet to the point of oversupply). Possibly in August, the supply will be fully disposed,” she added.

In the first quarter of 2019, the region recorded a production of around 48 metric tons or 48,000 kilograms, an increase of 4.35 percent from the 46 MT of the same period in 2018.

In the region, 60 percent of the mango production is for immediate consumption and 40 percent are for processing and export.

The DA-Davao said there are still initiatives prepared in case of oversupply of mango production like agribusiness and marketing assistance programs, market linkages, and rehabilitation programs.

The agency rehabilitated a total of 170 hectares of mango trees this year in Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, and Davao Occidental. The increase of production was also attributed in the rehabilitation program.

“If there will be farmers who will have a hard time selling their mangoes in the market, the agency will help and assist them through programs),” Seguiro said.

Last week, the price of mangoes at Bankerohan Public Market in Davao City has dropped to P60 to P80 per kilogram (kg), which is around 30 percent to 50 percent lower than last month’s P120 per kg.
