Eastern Police District chief relieved for assaulting lady cop

NATIONAL Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Director Guillermo Eleazar has ordered the relief of Brigadier General Christopher Tambungan, director of the Eastern Police District (EPD), for allegedly assaulting a lady police officer.

Corporal April Santiago said Tambungan verbally assaulted her at about 7 p.m. on May 12, when he confronted her near a police community precinct in Greenhills, San Juan City, where she is assigned, for allegedly failing to help him undertake a task.

A closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage on the incident showed Tambungan striking Santiago's head and swinging his car door to hit her.

"Unfortunately, a report of this incident reached my office only yesterday (June 18). Apparently, Corporal Santiago hesitated to file a complaint due to her fear that she might be the one to get reprimanded," said Eleazar.

"In the light of Corporal Santiago's complaint, I made a partial investigation of the matter and based on this, I have come to believe the allegations of Corporal Santiago. I further believe that the physical actuations of Gen Tambungan, including his alleged verbal abuse upon his victim are unjustified and completely unbecoming of an officer of the PNP, " Eleazar added.

Tambungan, who was transferred to the office of Eleazar, will be replaced by Police Colonel Florendo Quebuyen, the EPD deputy district director for administration.

Tambungan, a member of PNPA Class 1987 and former Manila Police District deputy director for administration, replaced Police Brigadier General Bernabe Balba, who was relieved from the post in March, after a member of the EPD's District Drug Enforcement Unit (DDEU) was arrested for robbery extortion.
