DTI rolls out next gen online business name registration

ENTREPRENEURS applying for business name registration can now do it online as the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 7 has rolled out the Business Name Registration System (BNRS) Next Gen website.

According to Marivic Aguilar, DTI-Cebu provincial office chief for small and medium enterprise development division, business owners can register through the updated website https://www.bnrs.dti.gov.ph and pay the corresponding fees through GCash.

“It will save them time and money, especially since they had to line up before the website was launched,” she told SunStar Cebu.

The public can file their business name (BN) application, whether it’s new or late renewal, pay via GCash and download and print their own Certificate of Business Name Registration right in the comfort of their homes through their mobile or desktop computers.

A business owner has to fill in basic information like name, birthdate, name of the business and its nature, and pay a fee of P230 minimum for barangay-based businesses and up to P2,000 for businesses with wider coverage.

When registering a business name, a busines owner must see to it that it has no reserved name content; it’s available, registered and not scandalous; it has passed Soundslike Validation; it has no trade name content; and it has no Intellectual Property word content.

Because of the traffic from the website, Aguilar said that sometimes the portal crashes, but she assured that the infrastructure of their online platform will improve.

Manuel Labrador, senior BN examiner, said those business names that are still covered by the five-year validity have been integrated to the new system.

He added that business owners also have three months’ leeway after the expiration date to renew their BN.

Feedback

Hedda Gimena, 34, who operates a retail business in Cebu City, said they welcome the new and easier way to process the BN.

However, she raised concerns especially on the capability of the website to stay up despite the traffic and payment system.

“Since we’re already in the digital age, we have to adapt to the current trend. But I hope that the system will work and there will still be tellers that will be able to guide business owners in the process,” she said.

Allan Fariola, 57, who traveled for about two hours from Carmen to Cebu City to have his business name renewed for his spare parts business said he still had to get accustomed to the process.

Fariola brought his 13-year-old daughter, who is tech-savvy, to listen to the new online system orientation held at the DTI 7 office on Wednesday, June 19, 2019.

“I believe this will make everything faster, even the payment method,” he told SunStar Cebu.

Meanwhile, the DTI in this website released an advisory informing the public that their application for business name registration may take longer to process than its usual processing time due to the technical challenges it is experiencing with the upgrading of its online BNRS Next Gen.

“Rest assured that we are doubling our efforts to normalize our operations at the soonest time possible, the DTI advisory said.
