Custodio: The small things

Custodio: The small things

I LEARNED something when my college bff, Aileen, came for a visit about three weeks ago. We were up early at 5 a.m. because we were going to have breakfast at the beach. As she was fixing the bed, she told me, “I always make sure that the bed is all made up before I leave. It may be a small thing but that in itself, is already an achievement!”

I watched her, as she neatly folded and refolded her blanket, fluffed pillows into better shapes and covered the bed with the duvet creaseless, you’d think it hadn’t been slept in! Needless to say I was quite amazed. Yes, I found it amusing that anyone would make a big fuss out of tidying a bed! Honestly, folding my blanket every morning was pretty much, “making the bed” for me!

In the following weeks after she left, I would always find myself thinking about what she said about getting small things done when you can do it. It may seem like a menial task but when you think about it, the sense of accomplishment that you get from it is a good way to start any given day!

I found myself making the extra effort to actually make my bed pretty before I leave for work. Somehow doing it always puts me in a better mood. The positive vibe that it gives me the extra push to do better for the rest of the day! It just proves to me how much, in the grand scheme of things, little tasks can make a big difference. We are often too caught up in making it big and getting monumental tasks done, I have always thought that’s the only way to make something of myself. I have come to realize though, through the years, that the little things can be as important. I guess it is because it’s a small sure step towards the big strides that we always aim for in life.

So, appreciate the small things because they add up to become bigger things. They are small packets of victories that can efficiently fuel our drive to do bigger, better things. They are little peeks into what could be when we achieve what we hope to get. They are the needed push in the right direction, the encouragement that we need to keep trying until we attain our goals. What do you think?

Happy Sunday Everyone!
