THE 5th Goodwill Chess Match between Cagayan de Oro-Misamis Oriental (CDO-MisOr) and Davao City will highlight the cash-rich 2nd Robert Tan Memorial Cup on June 28 at the Limketkai Mall in Cagayan de Oro City.

Winning the annually-held match last year behind the reinforcement of the “FEU Tamaraw Boys”, International master (IM) Richelieu Salcedo III, Lennon Hart Salgados, Alfredo Rapanot, Antonio Chavez Jr., and Christian Arroyo, Team CDO-MisOr will have a hard time this time around to dominate the Davawenyos anew.

“Yes, mas kusog ang linya sa Davao karon pero kombati kaayo ‘ni nga engkwentro sa ahedres it’s anybody’s game,” said Cagayan de Oro team skipper Fr. Vic Arellano, as he relayed that Grandmaster (GM) candidate Oliver Dimakiling will spearhead the visiting Davawenyos alongside fellow newcomer in youthful Carl Zirex Sato.

Arellano told SunStar Cagayan de Oro the host team will still enjoy the all-out support of the now Manila-based Cagayan de Oro pawnpushers in the much-awaited 16-board match-up.

“Modula gihapon ang mga Manila boys nato and that’s what adds more excitement sa atong yearly nga goodwill match against Davao team,” Arellano said.

All participants, Arellano said, will also see action in the Memorial Cup on June 29 to 30 with the lion’s share of P100,000 cash awaiting the “tatluhan” team champion.
