Southwestern University expands sports program

EXPECT the Southwestern University (SWU-Phinma) to be more active in various sporting events with the launching of a sports club program this school year.

“The sports club program is an addition to our existing athletic sports program. All the students are basically welcome to join a sports club,” said SWU-Phinma athletic director Pio Solon.

He said the school has created a sports club for chess, football, volleyball, basketball, taekwondo, Olympic weightlifting and badminton. The sports club is open to elementary, secondary and college students.

“The rationale of this is to give additional service to the parents of our school. What’s happening is most of the students are into gadgets, that’s why we are encouraging them to get into sports,” he said.

Solon said the sports club will be manned by designated coaches who will assist the students on sports and skills development.

“We see this program as a sustainable root for our grassroots. Instead of sending them to internet cafés, we encourage them to play sports and get the chance to represent the school,” Solon said.

With the integration of the sports clubs, the school is looking for additional presence in the multi-sporting events like the Cebu City Olympics, Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association, the Milo Little Olympics, the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. and Private Schools Athletic Association.

“The sports club is the one to represent the school in different sporting events in the basic education level,” he said. “The program will undergo an evaluation for the first year and if good things will happen this year we are going to broaden the program. We are starting small and we try to maintain this with quality. We are playing catch up.”

Solon said one of the promising sports clubs is the chess team.

“I’m hopeful, especially on our chess program, because our head is a national master. I do see our chess club players competing at the national or international level in a few years time,” he said.

SWU-Phinma is inviting all the interested students to join in clubs which will officially start in July.

“Even if they will not compete, they can do it for recreation,” he said.
