THE gustatory experience of a guest in a new place is always part of the tourism experience. As Filipinos, we always equate our hospitality and warm accommodation of guests by the warmth and the deliciousness of the food we serve.

Because of this tradition, there seemed to be nothing new anymore. If you go around the country, you may find restaurants in Luzon specializing in certain dishes similar to those in the Visayas and Mindanao.

But here in Davao City, there are restaurants that are very much aware that the experience should be part of the package, aside from the greatness of the meal. As a restaurant, they see to it that they also innovate to promote Davao through their culinary offerings.

1. RD Crab Shack

The Philippines is an archipelago. A few hours or even minutes of road trip may take you to the nearest beach. Hence, seafood is abundant. There will always be one good seafood restaurant wherever we go in the country. But RD Crab Shack in Torres St., Davao City ups their game and takes serving crabs to a whole new level.

Their crabs come in three unique flavors: salted egg, chili garlic, and butter garlic. Although other restaurants, may already be serving crabs slathered with these flavors, RD Crab Shack prides themselves with the use of all-natural ingredients for these meals. All the three are the restaurant’s bestsellers.

Aside from crabs, RD Crab Shack also has a native chicken dish they call Chicken Sabuntong. This is cooked in a traditional way, inside a still cylindrical bamboo, steamed with all the spices inside allowing the flavors to really seep through the meat. This is a bestseller even for food delivery services.

2. DGlicious

Yes, buffet restaurants are everywhere. But with only P199 fee for adults, P159 for senior citizens, and P130 for children, the options for this kind of buffet restos are slim. But it’s here in Davao City, particularly in Anda Street. Many people flock to the restaurants with their families and barkada because of the affordable and yet satisfying meal.

They have the usual fried chicken, shrimp with gambas sauce, pinakbet, pork humba, and the sweet and sour chicken. But the one to be watched out for and the crowd’s favorite is the dessert: their unique Banana Fritters with Cheese Dip. Customers really look forward to the dessert. There is a certain flavor play in the tongue of the banana and the cheese that unsurprisingly complement each other.
