ALLIES of Leyte Representative-elect Martin Romualdez expressed Wednesday, June 26, their full support to his House speakership bid.
“We are 100 percent behind Congressman Martin as Speaker. We need to get his views on how to make the next Congress more effective in legislating the laws that are beneficial to our countrymen,” said Albay Representative Joey Salceda, who hails from the ruling PDP-Laban, during the caucus.
Anak Kalusugan Partylist Representative Michael Defensor also said that even though the partylist coalition has not yet named a candidate, most of his colleagues have already signed a manifesto backing Romualdez.
"Members of the partylist coalition agreed to vote as a bloc. Majority, however, that I have spoken to has already indicated their preference for Congressman Martin as Speaker pending the possible endorsement of President [Rodrigo] Duterte,” Defensor said.
“If the election for Speaker will be held today, Congressman Martin definitely has the numbers,” he added.
Romualdez said he was "overwhelmed by the outpouring of support" from his colleagues in the multi-party coalition.
“I am fortunate to be surrounded by peers who served as an inspiration and encouragement in the many years that I served in Congress. It is an honor to represent them as one of their leaders in the 18th Congress,” said Romualdez, head of Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats and Philippine Constitution Association.
He also noted that in the 18th Congress, he sought to deliberately expose the potential of the legislative department for the President's and Executive Department's to have a "real working partner."
“Ours is a herculean task. We have to live up to the expectation of President Duterte and of our people. With the help of every member of the 18th Congress, I am confident that we can help deliver the promises of President Duterte to our people,” he added. (Ryniel Berlanga/SunStar Philippines)
