AN OFFICIAL from the Department of Health said constant sitting is “modern smoking.”

National Nutrition Council (NNC) 7 regional nutrition program coordinator Dr. Parolita Mission said the effect of constantly sitting is the same as that of smoking.

“Sitting is the new smoking,” said Mission, who added that constantly sitting without any activitiy leads to many illnesses.

Mission also said that most workers who spend their working hours sitting also don’t follow a healthy diet.

Fifty percent of the population also have a sedentary lifestyle--with most just watching TV or using their gadgets.

Mission is requesting employers to put up policies that will encourage workers to be physically active at work.

Mission also said that exercice or physical activities can help in the mental health of a worker. (HBL of SuperBalita Cebu)
