FLOODWATERS inundated 25 houses in Barangay Tabao in Valladolid town, Negros Occidental after a heavy downpour that started Wednesday night, June 26, 2019.
John Dexter Celiz, head of the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (LDRRMO), said heavy rains continued until early morning of Thursday resulting in waist-deep flood.
Celiz said they have yet to validate the total number of families and individuals affected.
No injuries were reported but most of the personal belongings of the affected residents were drenched.
"Tabao is a low-lying barangay and Valladolid is a coastal town thus, it usually floods during bad weather like heavy rains and typhoons," he added.
Due to the heavy downpour, a tree in the nearby barangay of Doldol was uprooted around 11 p.m. on Wednesday.
No injuries or casualties were reported but the fallen tree damaged some electric wires.
The Negros Occidental Electric Cooperative (Noceco) responded to the incident to ensure power supply.
As of 4 p.m. Thursday, June 27, most of the affected houses were still submerged although the floodwaters have started to subside.
The LDRRMO is intensifying its declogging operations for the flood to fully subside.
Its head said they were also monitoring other low-lying areas in the locality for possible flooding.
Celiz also warned the residents to be cautious of the possible diseases borne by flooding, especially leptospirosis and dengue fever.
"We are now coordinating with the Department of Social Welfare and Development for the assistance it can extend to the flood-affected families," he added.
