Del Rosario: What if?

A COUPLE of days ago, while driving the car on my way to pick up my husband Mike, I had a Eureka moment!

I was “praying/talking to God,” as I usually did while driving. But then I was distracted because my cell phone kept beeping. Texts and maybe viber or messenger updates. That same day, the Facebook App on my phone mysteriously got uninstalled and I remembered Mike’s last article on FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out).

With this line of thought, I suddenly had a crazy (or brilliant?) idea. What if, every time my phone rings or beeps, before I answer or check the message, I think of God first? I say a simple greeting or prayer, like, “Hi there Lord, let’s see who’s calling!” Or depending on your concerns, something like, “Hi Jesus, am checking my phone again. I hope this is the good news I am waiting for.”

What if, every time I open my Facebook account (after I reinstall it), I think of God first? Or just whisper a short prayer like, “Just checking in, Lord!” Isn’t this what many, if not most people do with their FB account? Check In whenever they go to a certain place? Take pictures of the food they are eating and posting them online? Liking, if not commenting on the posts of their friends?

What if each one of us with cell phones and Facebook accounts just think of God every time (before) we use our phones? Wow! Wouldn’t that be amazing? There could be billions of people praying or talking to God at the same time. Maybe, if we do this, there could be less feelings of envy, less fear of missing out, more positive thoughts and vibes being shared, as more prayers are uttered. There could be peace on earth.

We all know how the misuse and overuse of the cell phone can be so distracting, anti-social, detrimental to health, and even life threatening. (Mike’s pet peeve is my texting while walking.) Maybe, IF we remember to call on God before we do anything with our cell phones, we will have the better sense to use it wisely and properly. Think about it!

My dear fellow cell phone owners and users,

I have asked this question rhetorically, many times, especially when we travel, or when the family members have to meet after each one’s different agenda of activities. “How did we ever manage without a cellphone in the past?” Can you imagine life without your phone? What if we do not have a cell phone?

Well, I guess I wouldn’t want you to waste your brain cells thinking of the very different scenario. After all, I believe that for most of us, the cellphone is the one thing we wouldn’t like to leave the house without. Nowadays, it is that important to us. I would encourage us instead, to focus on using our phones (including the many different apps installed in it) wisely.

Call me crazy, but I love the idea I just presented earlier. Just imagine, what if we think of God and say a prayer, every time before we use our cellphones?

I believe that the more we connect to God, the more blessed our lives will be.

Be happy! Stay connected to God!

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
