Healthy alternative in the island

THE town of Moalboal may be a small one but it is the best place for underwater adventures such as snorkeling, scuba diving or enjoying the beach parties with the company of thrill-seeking locals and tourists.

With so many fun and breathtaking activities to do in Moalboal, the number of visitors increases every year as well as the number of room accommodations, restaurants and cafes. One of the food stops you should look forward to when visiting Moalboal, specifically in Panagsama Beach, is Shaka Cafe.

Shaka Cafe, one of the country’s famous concept stores which offers healthy and tasty alternatives, opened its branch in Cebu in November 2018.

The colorful shack is as colorful as its smoothie bowls with its signature swing and open kitchen. Here, you can witness how the smoothie bowls, drinks and other vegan delights are prepared by its friendly and accommodating staff.

According to one of the owners, Ben Plummer, the reason why they opened this shack in Cebu was to offer healthy and tasty food that would give a “Thalassophile” (according to the internet, a person who loves oceans—divers, adventurers etc.) the energy to get through the day’s adventures.

Shaka Cafe proves that eating nutritiously doesn’t mean just eating vegetable salads.

Its colorful, meticulously prepared and creatively presented smoothie bowls (¡¡Boom Dia!!, Cloud 9 Kook, Bakunawa Bowl, Super Bowl, Blissful Butterfly, Green Out) are made with fresh island fruits with homemade vegan granola, and are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and nutrients that will instantly boost one’s energy. Ninety percent of its ingredients are locally sourced, and it only chooses ingredients with proven health benefits.

Aside from serving healthy alternatives, one of Shaka’s goals is to create awareness throughout the country about the need to look after ourselves and the environment. The cafe uses only reusable spoons, polished coconut husks as bowls and metal straws.

“By reducing one’s dependency on single-use plastics and decreasing individual consumption of meat, we’re not only taking better care of ourselves but also taking better care of the environment. We need to consider the coming generations and leave a sustainable mark for all living beings to prosper in a future world that’s healthier, cleaner and greener,” Ben shared.

The brand also aims to promote the country by carefully choosing its locations as it likes to adapt to the surroundings using reclaimed materials. The interiors of all its branches were inspired by a tropical life where one can definitely enjoy the island vibe. From a 20-meter garage turned into a small shack in the island of Siargao, Shaka Cafe now has four branches on the famous islands of the country namely Siargao, Bohol, El Nido and Cebu.

Shaka Cafe in Moalboal, Cebu is open every day from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
