Salvador: June 2019 musings: what impresses you?

AGE have its way of showing me what’s important. Years ago, when I started earning enough, I would buy the things I wanted. Things like belts, bags and shoes screaming with monograms. The fascination for screaming logos passed. It wasn’t as “shiny” as it used to be, which is a good thing because it didn’t fit my commuting lifestyle.

Yes, I commute. I refuse to own a car because I’m lazy to drive, the traffic is crazy and maintenance is too much of an effort. Cars I see as a utility. I believe I have hopped on cars with crests, a cat or an angel on its hood. It transported me to where I needed to be. In other words, fancy cars don’t really dazzle me.

Esperienza.

To support friends, I said yes to their invitation to some Italian fancy car esperienza event. But when I approached the desk, Mr. Sales Manager blurted out, “Sorry, this is exclusively for the convention delegates.” Ugh. Did I even look like I was groveling to ride their car?

If they tried to push “high Italian lifestyle” with lousy internal communication, a quick ride, a set meal of sandwich with coffee or juice, and a pack of brownies to say thank you for esperienza-ing, then they took the wrong turn. Polizia! Give them 5/5 lemons!

Amazing cleaning gadget.

What impresses me now are stuff that makes my home life convenient, like a Dyson vacuum cleaner. I never considered expensive cleaning gadgets but this one brand seems good. The chic, cordless gadget sucks dirt, dust mites and cleanses the air. At its price, it should suck negativity as well.

The brand presented its newest model, the V11, at Chimes in Sales recently with host Bobby Yan demonstrating the features of the gadget, a more powerful version of the previous model he presented last year.

An O.C. on home cleaning, I ordered a V10 Absolute. I will tell you how it will work out for me. But I’m giving it 5 apples as early as now.

Ending a caffeine love affair.

After 19 years, Basti’s Brew is saying farewell to its clients and closing its doors at the end of the month. The new management’s rental cost made the owners decide not to pursue the business.

What I will miss from the impressive menu? Basti’s Strong Brew (one of the best coffee in town), Tuna Burger, Tuna Pesto Pasta and Grilled Chicken with Pasta.

What I will miss most? 1. The Sardines Pizza. I am listing it as a classic, just like Merco’s Four Season Pizza. Sadly, another good local pizza will be gone again; and 2. The Banana Mackintosh. This pie is a dream, and like what it is, it disappears form the shelf like it wasn’t there at all. Yup, It’s that delicious. Nobody makes this pie in Davao like Basti’s does.

Thank you for a wonderful 19 caffeinated years, Basti’s Brew! Enjoy the 5 apples until we meet again.
