Gwen-Davide team dared to bag 2020 SGLG award

BAGGING the 2020 Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) award was the challenge the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Cebu issued to the Provincial Government under the incoming administration of returning governor Gwen Garcia and vice governor-elect Hilario Davide III.

During the executive department’s turnover ceremony last Friday, June 28, 2019, DILG Cebu Director Jerome Gonzales said the SGLG focuses on the implementation of DILG-funded projects, which include the challenge fund for local government units (LGU) and local development funds.

Records from the DILG revealed that from 2015 to 2017, the number of LGUs awarded with the SGLG increased by the year.

In 2015, 254 LGUs or around 50 percent of LGUs in the country received the award.

There were 306 LGU awardees in 2016 and 449 recipients of the SGLG award in 2017.

A significant drop in the number of awardees, though, was reported in 2018 with only 263 SGLG recipients.

“In that year, no province or city in Region 7 got the award. For (the) Cebu Provincial Government, our challenge was how to get at least 10 percent of the towns and cities under the proponent LGU to pass the SGLG,” Gonzales said.

Garcia, for her part, welcomed the challenge and assured coordination with the 52 towns and component cities in the province under her leadership.

“That’s a very good challenge and a challenge I must accept. Let’s just hope we’ll work for it,” she said. (RTF)
