Mendoza: Tobacco smoke-free all year round

JUNE is National No Smoking Month Celebration. The celebration is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 183, s. 1993, “Declaring the Month of June of Every Year as National No Smoking Month.”

The celebration is a timely prelude to the observance of National Nutrition Month this month of July where we focus the need to observe eating nutritious foods and moving away from those that will cause a lot of diseases. Thus, as we ended the National No Smoking Month, we need to renew our commitment to protect our learners and teachers from the dangers of smoking by keeping schools and offices tobacco-free all year round.

It can be recalled that the celebration of the National No Smoking Month this year, Department of Education (DepEd) is focusing on promoting the implementation of DepEd Order No. 48, s. 2016 or the Policy and Guidelines on Comprehensive Tobacco Control in all schools and DepEd offices.

And as we also celebrated Father’s Day this June, the Facebook page that promotes the anti-tobacco smoke advocacy had this catchy phrase to once more remind the husbands and fathers to start or be the model in the promotion of the said advocacy: “Salamat po sa pagtayo para sa inyong pamilya, at sa pagpapahalaga sa kalusugan ng inyong mga anak. Dadalhin nila hanggang sa paglaki ang inyong kalinga at disiplina.”

DepEd's comprehensive tobacco control policy was issued three years ago and the challenge to DepEd personnel and teachers is the extent that they are promoting and implementing the policy.

In related development, the Child Protection Committees in schools are guided by DepEd Order No. 48, s. 2016 to monitor compliance and report violations of the ban on smoking, the ban on selling and advertising tobacco products near schools, and the ban on receiving donation from tobacco companies.

For more information on how you can play an active role in promoting the anti-smoking activities in DepEd schools and offices, you may follow Eskwela Ban sa Sigarilyo Facebook page so that you can learn more about how you can help keep your school and offices tobacco-free!

This corner hopes that everyone will play an active role not just by advocating on the campaign but by modelling not to anymore be involved in the said vice knowing how harmful the effects are in the lives of those non-smokers especially the schoolchildren.
