Negative response

A CITY official said some owners of self-styled accommodations are not in favor of getting a business permit.

"Nag meet tayo with them two or three months ago with property owners and condominium unit owners but hindi masyadong maganda ang response nila kasi ayaw nila kumuha ng business permits (We met with some of the property and condominum unit owners aroud two or three months ago and they did not responded well on getting a business permit)," Davao City Tourism Operations Office (CTOO) head Generose Tecson said in a phone interview Sunday, June 30, 2019.

"So right now we are studying other models for self-styled accommodation like the model of Japan, Hongkong, Singapore and even Malaysia," she added.

She added that in other countries, self-styled accommodation are required to get business permit otherwise it is considered illegal.

Tecson expressed concern over the increasing number of self-styled accommodation in the city and the security and safety of tourists who are availing this kind of accommodation.

"Later on, we can call another meeting with property managers on how we can go about it because this is what we really have to take up also with property managers and condo unit owners as it is already included in our tourism code," she said.

"Maybe in the near future, with the DCCCII's (Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc.) help, we can explore how to encourage the said sector to do so," she added.

Tecson said, the city's tourist arrival has been increasing since 2016 which caused the need for more accommodations in the city.

For the first quarter this year, Davao City 564,037 total number of tourists. Of the total, 505,491 were domestic tourists, 45,042 were foreign tourists, and 13,504 were balikbayans or those Filipinos who visited but are now living abroad.
