Davao City malnutrition lowest at 0.9%

THE Davao City Health Office (CHO) said the severely acute malnutrition (SAM) status in the city is currently on its lowest with 0.9 percent, based on their latest nutrition survey.

CHO head Josephine Villafuerte said that since the Community Integrated Management for Acute Malnutrition (Cimam) started in 2013 under then mayor and now Pesident Rodrigo Duterte, there have been a great reduction of children under the severely acute malnourished category.

Cimam is the agency's program that treats malnutrition by giving children the so-called food medicine.

Prior to the program's implementation, the severe acute malnutrition in the city reached nine percent in 2013.

"The nutrition status here in Davao City has since been improving since we have a lot of initiatives in this area," Villafuerte said during yesterday's flag-raising ceremony at the City Hall of Davao.

During the ceremony, CHO and the National Nutrition Council (NNC) officiated the opening of the 45th Nutrition Month.

The city government awarded top five outstanding barangay nutrition scholars and barangay council who have supported the city's efforts in improving their respective area's nutrition status.

Barangay Mahayag in Bunawan District was on top followed by Barangay Malamba in Marilog District (second), Barangay 31-D (third), Barangay Talomo Proper of Talomo South District (fourth) and Barangay Colosas in Paquibato District (fifth).
