LAST Wednesday, L'Oreal Philippines conducted its first ever hair show in Cagayan De Oro, in partnership with N&B Beauty Distributorship, at the Platinum Ballroom of the Mallberry Suites Business Hotel. This L'Oreal Look & Learn event was extra special for me because my only daughter served as one of their models.

My girl, Louise, sat for the on-the-spot demonstration and she gave the final solo catwalk for the event finale. I was stage "smothering" to the highest level, seated at the front seat of a venue that was packed to the rafters by stylists and salon owners coming from as far as Surigao, Bukdinon, Butuan, Iligan, and of course, CDO.

L'Oreal brought in the famous power duo from the JuRo Salon Exclusif in BGC, Master Precision Cutter Jude Hipoloto and Master Colorist Rose Velasco, to engage with stylists in the NorthMin region. The goals for the event were to upgrade skills, learn new styling techniques, and discover the latest L'Oreal Professionel Products.

JuRo is famed for their ten thousand peso haircuts and fifteen grand coloring jobs. They both say these are actually starting figures, and the amount can even exceed depending on the work done. They do a total analysis of the hair, face shape, and skin tone. Hair cutting and coloring is not just a matter of slitting hair and slapping on dye like paint. It combines technique with artistry, which can only be executed properly with training and years of experience. And Jude and Rose definitely have a lot of that, which is why they are now in the position to teach other stylists with the hope of elevating the standards of the industry.

Jude said: "It pains me to see haircuts that cost 150 pesos. It is too low for a craft that has the capacity to make people feel good. What I wish for salon owners is to elevate that standard because we all put in quality work and we deserve more. When you think about it, hairdressers have more presence in people's lives. You only see your doctor when you're sick and you only see your lawyer when you have legal issues. But your hairdresser, you see him or her at least once a month."

Team JuRo invites everyone to find out what the buzz is all about by scheduling an appointment in their salon. The only way to know and understand the hype is to let them work their magic on you. They have many clients flying in from Japan, Korea, Europe, the US, Australia, and even New Zealand.

Together with the JuRo team is the General Manager of L'Oreal PPD, Luis Anotnio Yanga. He said that he truly believes that the cornerstone for uplifting the beauty industry is education. Majority of the seminars are only in Mega Manila, so being a Mindanaoan himself hailing from Zamboanga, he was compelled to bring these hair caravans around the province. He knows that talent is everywhere and by democratizing education, L'Oreal is able to help everyone in the country.

Mr. Yanga noted that L'Oreal attributes part of the success of their hair caravans to their partners. Here in Northern Mindanao, Atty. Beda Joy Elot of N&B Beauty Distributorship serves as the perfect partner to turn their company's vision into a reality.

Atty. Elot started in the beauty industry in year 2009 with her very first Vida Salon. She later moved onto distributorship with N&B. She said this Look & Learn Event is only a beginning. Her dream is to eventually set up a L'Oreal Academy here in Cagayan De Oro soon, so stylists no longer have to spend a lot to travel to the big city to join workshops and seminars.

The Look & Learn event was perfectly hosted by the L'Oreal education

manager, Michael Indon. The models were comprised of six girls and three boys, who all confidently strutted their stuff on the runway and on the path by the audience area to showcase the magic that JuRo did on their hair, which is also known as a person's crowning glory.

The two on-stage models, who had work done to their hair in the actual venue, were Joan and Louise. Joan took on the challenge of sporting a millennial pink hairdo and received Jude's precision cutting on stage. Louise, who is the youngest and tallest girl, had her virgin hair transformed with balayage coloring technique applied to her locks while the event participants looked on. Both girls finished their hair treatments and later on walked down the catwalk.

The other 7 models, who opened the show by sashaying down the runway and showing their finished hair, were: Christy, Jumaiica, Carla, Milky, Jethro, Elched, and Kin.

Overall, the L'Oreal Look & Learn show was well-attended by beauty professionals, who came to learn hair cutting, hair styling, and hair coloring techniques. They were also exposed to new products, which they can use for their businesses. L'Oreal, through their JuRo ambassadors, was able to educate, uplift, and inspire everyone to take their profession to the next level. The beauty business is a noble industry that has the capacity to make ordinary people into shining stars by boosting their self-confidence. Make no mistake and invest in yourself because there's one and only YOU!
