FOR the second-straight year, Cagayan de Oro-Misamis Oriental (CDO-MisOr) team impressively won over the visiting Davao All Stars by 6 points, 19-13 in the 5th Mindanao Goodwill Chess Match on 16 boards held last Friday, June 28, at the 2nd floor of Limketkai Mall, Cagayan de Oro City.

"We're very sad that we travelled long for seven hours from Davao only to lose in Cagayan de Oro," said Tagum City Board Member Alfredo de Veyra III, who reinforced the Davao team in the executive level.

Winning also the annually-held match by same margin, 6 points last year in Davao, the CDO-MisOr wards of Fr. Vic Arellano and Domingo Oga now tied the series at 2 wins apiece and one draw.

"The only difference is that they beat us twice by 2 points only. We came back strong for two successive years and won big all by 6 points. Next year, sila na sab ang host. We expect nga grabe gyod ilang himoon nga preparasyon," said the now senior citizen Oga, who acknowledged the reinforcement of former Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws varsity players Christian Arroyo, Lennon Hart Salgados, IM Richelieu Salcedo III, Alfredo Rapanot Jr. and Antonio Chavez Jr. as vital to the host squad's back-to-back win.

In the first round, the FEU boys -- whom Doming (Oga) now called "Mandirigma" for being enlisted in the Philippine Air Force and Philippine Army -- produced 3.5 points on the victories of Arroyo and Chavez over John Rey Batucan and Carl Zirex Sato, respectively, as IM Salcedo, Salgados and Rapanot warmed up with a draw against Rodrigo Catayas, Arena Grandmaster (AGM) Henry Roger Lopez and Jayson Salubre.

Oro's National Master Rustum Tolentino and Johnnel Balquin provided the other wins opposite former Olympiad campaigner, NM Alexander Lupian and Jimmy Dano as Nazario Ubanan settled for a truce against FIDE Master Austin Jacob Literatus and National Master Levi Mercado and Allan Cantonjos lost to youthful Davawenyo Oberio Aglipay and Grandmaster candidate, IM Oliver Dimakiling.

It was a 3-3 standoff in the executive side as CDO-MisOr's Fr. Arellano, Jaime Joshua Frias II and Engr. Resurreccion "Jun" Gunayan waylaid De Veyra, lawyer Jose Dionisio "Jong" Guevarra and Cipriano Magalso.

In return, Davao's James Infiesto, Engr. Allan Diez and Rhynan Arce defeated Oga, Bryan Jose and Cleto "Bong" Vasquez in their respective board matches.

Handling the white pieces in second round, the FEU boys delivered four wins as Rapanot, IM Salcedo, Arroyo and Salgados unleashed their might against Dano, Salubre, Aglipay and Catayas with only Chavez yielding to Batucan.

Balquin completed a spotless drive with another triumph over NM Lupian as NMs Mercado and Tolentino drew with AGM Lopez and Sato as Cantonjos fell on 0-2 hole against FM Literatus.

The CDO-MisOr executives did better in the final round as the superb pair of Engr. Gunayan and Fr. Arellano made a 2-0 sweep, this time, at the expense of De Veyra and the super solid Engr. Diez.

"Na-trap nako iyang Knight with my light Bishop and that was the key," said Fr. Arellano of his memorable win against Diez.

Frias and Vasquez halved the points with International Arbiter (IM) Infiesto and Arce, leaving Oga as the only casualty at the hands of Atty. Guevarra.

"Hopefully next year, kamo na sab unta ang kapoy pag travel to Davao para makabalos `mi," De Veyra said in jest during the awards rites.
