No committee chairmanships for 2 opposition councilors

THE newly-elected Cagayan de Oro City councilors have gathered over the weekend to decide on the new committee chairmanships for the 19th City Council.

Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya, the current majority floor leader, said this will be announced on Wednesday, July 3, the first session of the councilors on their new term.

But Councilor Teodulfo Lao Jr. said based on their meeting, the only two opposition councilors -- Lordan Suan and Bebot Rodriguez -- do not have committee chairmanships. He said they are only tasked as members of some committees.

He said while some councilors retained their committee chairmanship, the others were moved to another.

Lao remains the chairman of the public utilities, but will also head a new one -- the traffic management committee.

Councilor Romeo Calizo remains the chairman of the committee on police, fire, and public safety.

Neophyte Councilor Girlie Balaba, meanwhile, confirmed she now heads the committee on social services, the committee Councilor Reuben Daba formerly chaired.

Councilor Ma. Lourdes Gaane also retains the chairmanship of the committee on health.

"This is still not final because of course, this will still be approved on by the majority on Wednesday. Kung dili gusto sa uban ang ilang new assignment, they can express it there ug mag-votation lang dayon," he added.

Meanwhile, Suan and Rodriguez surprised city employees with an appearance during the weekly flag raising Monday, July 1.

Both of them admitted that they still do not know which committee they are assigned.

Suan, who heads the committee on ethics, said he wants to try another committee.

"Gusto ko makasulay ug lahi nga committee para growth as a councilor ug lahi nga experiences," he said.

"I think we are going to do a great job. Bisan lahi mi nga partido but isa raman gihapon ta ug tinguha," he added.

Rodriguez, meanwhile, said she wants to grab the chairmanship of the committee on health, being a nurse for 12 years.

"Bisan minority kita, mo-support man gihapon ta sa mga proyekto basta for the people. Of course, I'm going to help the mayor, the City Council basta para lang sa ikaayo sa katawhan," she added.
