Iloilo City villages told to buy misting machine

ILOILO City Mayor Jerry Treñas has instructed villages to purchase misting machine to be used as preventive measure in the fight against mosquito-borne dengue disease.

Treñas took to task executive assistant for Barangay Affairs Fernando Jose Rico to discuss with village chiefs the procurement of misting machine as almost all 180 villages are now dengue-affected.

The City Health Office (CHO) will provide larvicide and train personnel for spraying operations.

The mayor broached the idea of putting tilapia fish in ponds to eliminate mosquito larvae.

He urged massive cleanup to get rid of breeding places of mosquitoes.

Dengue is a viral disease which infects a person with flu-like illness, and occasionally develops into a potentially lethal complication called severe dengue.

CHO already recorded 597 dengue cases with five deaths as of June 2019. There were a total of 878 dengue cases with six deaths last year.

The office continues to conduct health advocacies in all barangays, distribution of larvicides and spraying in areas with increasing dengue cases.

CHO is also utilizing non-structural protein 1 (NS1) based rapid diagnostic test (RDT) kits for early diagnosis and referral to hospital. (PR)
