Limpag: Ateneo’s Ignatius Run: Forever 25

Now on its ninth year, the 2019 Ignatius Run by the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu will be on July 21 at SM City Cebu. And, just like in the previous editions, this year’s run is organized by this year’s Silver Jubilarians, Batch 1994 led by Stanley Go, president of the SHS-Ateneo de Cebu Alumni.

Aside from the run, they will also have a golf tournament to be led by Jovi Neri later this year and the proceeds of both sports events will be used to fund their outreach projects.

“This is our chance to give back to our community,” said Go during the event’s launch on Tuesday at Shakey’s Mabolo.

“We were taught to be men for others, so that’s why the theme of the run is ‘Run For Others,’” said Igantius Run chairman Rodrick Garcia.

This year, the alumni association has had a book donation campaign done with the Department of Education and has also put up a water tank in a mountain school.

Through the run and the golf tournament, they hope to raise more funds for the association’s various beneficiaries; Dilaab Foundation, Eruf and its own scholarship program.

The run, too, is a perfect chance for those joining the Cobra Ironman to have that final road test before their event in August in Shangri-la, an event that was factored in when the group plotted the schedule.

So far, they already have 1,600 runners—600 from their corporate partners--and they are targeting some 3,000 to 4,000.

This year, Police Region 7 Director Debold Sinas has promised to send 100 to 150 runners from the police and will also provide security.

“We don’t have a target amount to raise, but we do have target number of runners,” said Go.

Runners can have their pick—21K, 12K and 6K—while those who have kids can have them join the 1K “Cosplay Division,” which is done in partnership with Archon Cebu. The route will see them going up north, all the way to Barangay Talamban but that could change in the next few days.

There’s a new mayor in Cebu City and we all know Edgar Labella is a running buff, being a regular at the Cebu City Sports Center as a member of the Walk and Talk Club.

Negotiations are being done to allow the organizers to use the South Road Properties, which has been closed since the controversial Mambaling Underpass started construction.

If the group gets the OK, that will only mean good news for the rest of the organizers of fun runs as it will open up the SRP for them. I know organizers of the Cebu Marathon would prefer the SRP if it was open to them.

Those who want to join the event may sign up at the Shakey’s branches in Ayala, SM City Cebu, F. Cabahug and The Walk or the Brown Cup in St. Patrick Square or at Cebu Business Park. They can also sign up at Velez Pharmacy Raintree Mall and the Ateneo de Cebu Alumni Office. The deadine is on July 7 though the group is open to the possibility of extending it to the last Friday before the event, if needed.
