Police to secure quarry sites in Cebu

THE Cebu Police Provincial Office (CPPO) chief has ordered checkpoints in places where legal and illegal quarry operations are reportedly rampant.

The identified quarry sites are found in the cities of Naga and Toledo, and in the municipalities of Asturias, Balamban, Consolacion, Compostela and Tuburan.

CPPO Director Roderick Mariano said on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 that he told the police station chiefs in the five local government units (LGUs) to arrest persons involved in hauling sand and gravel.

His move came after Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia issued Memorandum Circular 4-2019, which suspends all sand and gravel permits issued by the Province pending review.

CPPO Information Officer Eloveo Marquez said they will apprehend anyone who violates Garcia’s order.

Garcia also issued a memorandum that recalls all Province-owned vehicles.

For its part, the CPPO has started its inventory of the vehicles that were donated by the Capitol.

However, Mariano said Garcia did not ask him to return all the Province-issued police vehicles.

The governor only asked Mariano to check if the CPPO has extra vehicles as some departments in the Capitol are in need of service vehicles.

The CPPO has 50 police stations in 44 municipalities and six component cities.

Garcia’s Memorandum Circular 2-2019 was issued to immediately recall all Province-owned vehicles and equipment currently assigned through memorandum receipt to the different LGUs and offices.

Mariano said that if his personnel would discover they have a surplus of vehicles, he is willing to return the Province-donated vehicles.

He said he fears the CPPO’s service would be hampered if it lacks patrol cars, since some of the vehicles issued to them by the National Government are already obsolete. (WBS)
