Volunteerism alive in Benguet’s capital town

PEOPLE from all different walks of life have allotted their own time for the betterment of La Trinidad, Benguet.

A movement of volunteerism which started in 2018 seeks to aid in the tourism development of the community.

Valred Olsim, municipal tourism officer, said interested volunteers for the “VolunTourism” initiative may enlist themselves or their groups at the La Trinidad Tourism Office to participate in scheduled activities.

Volunteers are asked to enlist themselves into a group at the tourism office to participate in voluntary community development initiatives.

Olsim added there are 120 enlisted volunteers with an estimate of 15 to 25 persons per activity.

Volunteers composed of the youth and adults mostly from 15 to 30 years old while there are also volunteers in their 50s and senior citizens.

“We welcome all ages,” he added.

The volunteers usually join in cleanup drives, plogging or trash picking, however, after rainy season they partake in mural painting, beautification and participation of events.

Olsim said the volunteer movement is also inspired various groups to visit La Trinidad and render their services like tour-site mapping on potential sites, painting at StoBoSa, and plogging in our eco-sites like Mt. Yangbew.

An American businessman proposed that volunteerism within the community was an antidote for numerous social problems.

In some of the volunteer activities, groups were also enjoined to clean the most visited site in the town which is the La Trinidad Strawberry Farm.

“Join the growing movement of making our town a better place for community and visitors,” Olsim said and noted the people that could fix town would be the community themselves.

Volunteers can visit the newly opened tourism office at the municipal park where they will be required to fill up forms and schedule activities.
