Security measures beefed up in Zamboanga

MAYOR Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar has underscored the need for social awareness for people to be informed and conscious of the happenings in their surroundings, as Zamboanga City is constantly beset with threats.

Salazar issued the statement as authorities have intensified security measures in both the coastal areas and in the mainland following the twin bomb attacks in Indanan, Sulu last Friday, June 28.

Salazar said that it is also very important for residents to support and cooperate with anti-crime efforts of both police and military.

Colonel Leonel Nicolas, Task Force Zamboanga chief, said security protocols have been heightened through intensified inspections on all types of vehicles especially coming in to this city.

Immediately after the Sulu incident, Nicolas said troops both in the coastal and mainland areas have been alerted to intensify security in all ingresses and egresses of the city.

Salazar urged people to immediately report the presence of suspicious individuals, baggage or items including abandoned vehicles in their vicinity so these can be verified and acted upon.

She added that it is also very crucial for people not to forward or circulate unverified text messages or even Facebook posts to prevent panic and confusion. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
