Garcia wants PNP to hold greyhound ops in CPDRC

MAKING the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) into the province’s “pride” again is among the priorities of Gov. Gwen Garcia. But while the facility has become world-famous for its dancing inmates, the governor said that’s the last thing on her agenda.

For now, she wants a complete overhaul, which will include decongestion, a review and improvement of security system, and the rehabilitation of inmates.

“The CPDRC is one of our problem areas. Our focus will be on the rehabilitation and reformation of inmates. From being embarrassments and social outcasts, ironically they became a source of pride for Cebu. Karon, shame of Cebu na pud (Now, they’re back to being Cebu’s shame),” Garcia told reporters.

To help her realize this, Garcia has tapped the police in conducting more big-time greyhound operations in the facility.

A greyhound operation is a crackdown on illegal drugs and contraband in jails.

The matter was raised during a courtesy call on her by police officials led by Police Regional Office 7 Director Debold Sinas Wednesday, July 3, 2019. Sinas said the police will work closely with the Provincial Government and jail management on this.

Tablets believed to be party drugs, shabu, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, cash, cellphones and jewelry were confiscated in a greyhound operation at the facility on Sept. 7, 2018. (RTF)
