New police chief: No revamp needed

NEWLY-INSTALLED chief of Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) Colonel Henry Dampal said revamps or reshuffling of station commanders is not a priority, but he said changes may be adopted if necessary.

Dampal assumed Cocpo's top post on Wednesday and immediately called a command conference.

"So far walay revamp walang gagalawin ang atong gitan-aw is we will study the present set-up and we are open for changes if ever naa tay makita nga maayo sa ato diri atong i-adopt," Dampa said.

Initially, Dampal said deployment of policemen which is anchored on analysis of crime statistics has to be improved.

He said looking into the statistics is important in the deployment so measures and other security plans will be put in place.

The city's top cop has also ordered all commanders to make every police station friendly, open and accommodating to the public.

"Atong directive sa tanang station commanders is to make the stations friendly and open to the public to render assistance. I reminded them to make the station presentable and be good to the people," Dampal said.

Other priorities of the new city police director are the continuation of the campaign against illegal drugs, illegal gambling, internal cleansing and other anti-criminality efforts.

Dampal said there is also a need to strengthen further the relationship of the police with the community.

Dampal said he was informed that the local government unit has been very supportive to the programs of Cocpo.

"Though dili pa ta complete but unsay naa sa ato we will utilize our resources," Dampal said.

"We may have good plans and programs but without the support of the barangays and the community di nato makuha ang atong goals," he added.

Dampal said leading the city police may be challenging because of the bigger responsibilities but he said he is thankful for the trust and confidence of the higher headquarters.

Dampal was raised in Manticao, Misamis Oriental and spent his high school and college years in the city.

Prior to his new assignment, he served as chief of police of some municipal police stations in the province and Malaybalay City in Bukidnon; company commander in Iligan City police office, among others.
