Ring War in Digos tonight

A WEEK before Manny Pacquiao faces Joshua Clottey, another boxing event, dubbed as "Ring War in Davao del Sur" will be held on March 2 at the Plaza in Digos City.

Pitted in the main event is Philippine No. 1 junior featherweight contender Sonny Gonzales of Digos against Korean Boxing Council No. 2 Won Jung Won of Korea.

The 10-round fight is promoted by Jose Abad Santos Mayor Zander Khan, a former promoter of Pacquiao in Manila and now running for governor of Davao del Sur under the banner of former President Erap Estrada.

There will be two 10-rounders, three eight-rounders, two siz-rounders and a four-rounder curtain raiser in the boxing card that is open free to the public.

Added as a special feature will be an exhibition of World Boxing Council Intercontinental champion Balweg Bangoyan, who will be challenging WBCl super bantamweight king Toshiaki Nishioka on April 30 at Nihon Budokan in Tokyo, Japan.

The 23-year-old Balweg, a native of Jose Abad Santos, is ranked as the No. 1 by the website Philboxing with the highest winning percentage of 100 percent.

Balweg, called "The Davao Hitman,” has a ring record of 15 wins with seven knockouts, no loss or draw.

Nishioka has an impressive record of 35 wins with 22 Kos, four loses and three draws.

But the 5-foot-6 Balweg is confident of dethroning the Japanese champion.

"I want to follow the footsteps of my idol Manny Pacquiao," said Balweg, who is being trained by the veteran Vicente "Enting" Adriano of Davao City under the stable of Mayor Zander Khan.
