MANDAUE City Mayor Jonas Cortes is considering changing the schedule for collecting garbage following observations that this is one of the causes of the traffic congestion in the city.

Cortes visited the Guun Corp. Limited recycling plant in Barangay Tayud, Consolacion to inspect the residual waste collected from Mandaue City.

The mayor also wanted to find out if the agreement between the private firm and the Mandaue City Government is being followed. The City Government pays Guun Corp. P700 per ton of waste.

The garbage collected and processed by Guun Corp. will be bought and used by Apo Cement Corp. at P1,800 per ton.

Traffic congestion

Mandue City is expecting to get five more compactor trucks, but according to the Mandaue City Environment and Natural Resources Office some barangays own two garbage trucks.

Cortes is also looking at lifting the truck ban in the city to allow garbage trucks to collect waste at 8 p.m.

Eco-friendly

Reylann Rombla, processing in-charge of the waste recycling plant of Guun, said they receive 10 tons of waste every Tuesday and Thursday from Mandaue City.

The plant then processes the waste in compacted plastic which will be delivered to cement companies.

Their by-products are used as fuel instead of coal, which according to Rombla, is “eco-friendly.”

Vince Uy, sales and marketing manager of Guun, said the compacted plastic is safer because the carbon monoxide emission is lower by 17 percent compared to coal. It also has the same heating value as coal but will not emit too much smoke.

Meanwhile, Cortes clarified that the City will continue to use the Binaliw Landfill despite using the Guun recycling plant.
