TALISAY City athletes and sports aspirants will have something to look forward to under the administration of Mayor Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas Jr., who vows to promote sports.

Gullas, who’s an avid sports fan himself, announced a plan to organize a “Sports Summit” designated to develop the Talisay City’s aspirants. Gullas assumed office on June 30.

“Aside from developing potential basketball players, I plan to organize a Sports Summit, that aims to develop Talisaynons in various sports and athletic pursuit,” Gullas posted on his Facebook page, adding that the summit is not solely on basketball.

Gullas said he is closely coordinating with the Talisay City Sports Commission in making the summit possible.

“With the Sports Summit, we not only develop an available pool of athletes but we also help less fortunate but talented Talisaynons achieve their dreams through the power of sports,” read part of the post.

“As someone who comes from a family of sportsmen and educators, I believe that sports is a helpful tool in earning a free college education,” he added.

Gullas said the priority goal of the program is to give the athletes the chance of landing a scholarship.

“I truly believe winning is really secondary when it comes to sports, the most important thing is to use one’s talent in getting a scholarship to a premier university. In the end, we not only develop future generation of talented athletes, but also give them a bright future through education,” he said. “And that, for me, is the real victory.”

Talisay City recently won back-to-back titles in the Governor’s Cup Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament. (RSC)
