A HOMEGROWN bicycle shop in Davao City reported about 200 percent increase in sales in 2018 indicating an increase of adventure travelers or enthusiasts in the city.
Sikad Davao Tambayan Bike Shop owner Maria Leah Valencia said in an interview that they tripled their sales from 2016 from their bicycles, bicycle equipment, gears and jerseys, and services, reaching an estimation of P13 million sales in 2018.
“I think the significant increase is probably 200 percent that is why we opened another branch. First we have the Sikad Davao Tambayan Bike Shop located in Obrero Street and then now we opened another one in Matina, the Sikad Davao Dexmax Bicycle shop,” she said.
“The people are already open-minded into adventures and most of them are biking to school, work, and as bonding with family so those are maybe the main factors sales increased,” she added.
Sikad Davao head Dexter Maxino said the increasing number of riders in the city may also be due to various events for bike riders that are not limited to race or competition.
“In terms of the number of riders here in Davao, we have noticed a significant increase since 2010. At first, events were just limited to races and competitive events. But now, we are happy to note that events like these are starting to pop-up, something for the family and something to promote biking, especially mountain biking,” he said.
Sikad Davao will be one of the partners of Fox and Primer for their Mountain Biking Day (MTB) on July 20, targeting 100 to 200 bikers from the city. The trail was organized in Crocodile Park.
