Cebuano public to get a glimpse of future modes of transport

SOME 110 point-to-point (P2P) buses, 300 new taxis with automatic fare collection gadgets, electric jeeps and petroleum-powered jeepneys will be launched at the South Road Properties in Cebu City on Thursday, July 11, 2019, in accordance with the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program.

Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) 7 Director Eduardo Montealto Jr. made the announcement on Saturday, July 6.

“We will launch these LTFRB-approved modern vehicles and display them at SRP on July 11 so the public may know about them. The launching will show that we already have modern vehicles in Cebu, all brand new,” Montealto said.

The P2P buses, which are provided by Vallacar Transit Inc. that also owns and operates Ceres Liner, will ply the routes of Cebu South Bus Terminal (CSBT) to Sibonga and vice versa, CSBT to Danao City and vice versa and CSBT to Lapu-Lapu City and vice versa.

“We give provisional authority (franchise), pending the gadgets,” Montealto said.

As for the taxis, more than 6,000 units already ply the metro’s streets.

Montealto clarified that the 300 taxis are not additional units. The new taxis will occupy abandoned slots, or franchises that had not been renewed by their original owners for the last two years, hence the need to be filled, he said.

Aside from being equipped with an automatic fare collection gadget, all taxis in Cebu should have a dash camera, a global positioning system and WiFi by June 30, 2020, the official said. / EOB
