City to tap banks for payment of taxes

THE Cebu City Government will partner with their depository banks to allow taxpayers to easily and conveniently pay their taxes without going to City Hall.

Mayor Edgardo Labella made known the proposal after it was suggested to him by City Treasurer Jerone Castillo.

Castillo made the suggestion as a way to decongest the number of clients visiting their office.

“This is to ease up and probably declog the City Treasurer’s Office as a collecting zone. With this, we can probably hasten payment on taxes,” Castillo said.

Labella said before they will sign the memorandum of agreement with their three depository banks, namely Landbank of the Philippines, Development Bank of the Philippines and Veterans Bank, they will ask permission from the City Council to have the proposal approved into legislation.

The city treasurer said the City is one of the biggest depositors of these banks and it is only fitting that the management will give premium to the City’s request.

Labella said other government agencies like the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (Philhealth), Social Security System (SSS), Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) have implemented a similar system, which the City Government can duplicate.

Moreover, Labella said this move will show that Cebu City is business friendly, alluding to the previous administration of mayor Tomas Osmeña which ran after several businesses due to alleged non-payment of taxes and other issues, including the highly controversial rift with SM Prime Holdings and Rico’s Lechon, among others.

He said he will not follow in his predecessor’s footsteps, adding that he will uphold the rule of law and abide by due process. (FROM PAC OF SUPERBALITA CEBU / JKV )
