ORGANIZER Sunrise Events Incorporated's (SEI's) cancellation of the swim stage of the Penong's 5150 Triathlon Davao, which was held yesterday in an out-and-back course from the Waterfront Insular Hotel Davao, due to concerns over the quality of water at the Pakiputan Strait was indeed a tough call to make.

We laud the bold and professional move of the organizers for putting premium on the health and safety of over 500 participants composed mostly of Filipinos and others from different parts of the world.

"We recently conducted comprehensive water testing and the results reflect that the water is not currently suitable for recreational use. After consultation with local health officials, we have decided to cancel the swim leg having the safety of the participants as our utmost priority," SEI said in a statement.

Penong's Barbecue Seafoods and Grill spokesperson JJ Sarona also said a series of water quality tests were conducted but the last test conducted last Thursday, July 4, yeilded a result not favorable for recreational swimming. Results, however, only came out Saturday morning. Yes, it was short notice to participants who were looking forward to a great race ahead. But the necessity to scrap the opening leg of the triathlon was vital, otherwise, participants may be exposed to more harm if it was pushed through.

An incident like this, Sarona added, happens to races anywhere in the world.

All is well that ends well.
