Tell It to SunStar: Esperon’s baseless perjury case

By National Union of People’s Lawyers

IN LIEU of answering the accusations thrown against respondent government officials in the Amparo Petition filed by human rights defenders, National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr. files instead a baseless perjury case against the arbitrarily red-tagged groups Karapatan, Gabriela and Rural Missionaries of the Philippines (RMP).

Esperon claims RMP is not registered under the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), contrary to what was indicated in their petition. In a statement, RMP national coordinator Sr. Elenita Belardo refuted this, saying they filed the renewal of their registration in 2010 and that RMP has been submitting their General Information Sheet and Audited Financial Statements since then.

For (Esperon) to claim that we have not is a blatant lie. We are in possession of the receiving copies of the documents we have filed, particularly in the last four years. We will consult with the SEC to find out what happened with the documents we have submitted.

NUPL stands with its clients who are petitioners in good faith. The perjury case is nothing but a move to intimidate these human rights defenders who are merely applying for protection under the law.

Instead of filing baseless complaints, we call on Esperon to answer whether he, along with other respondents, have been committing acts that threaten the right to life, liberty and security of human rights defenders.
