More non-support cases filed vs cops after pay hike

SINCE the salaries of uniformed personnel were increased in January 2018, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has recorded an increase in the number of cases filed against philandering police officers who have failed to support either the wife or mistress.

From 215 in 2017, the PNP Internal Affairs Service (IAS) said the number of non-support cases increased to 301 in 2018.

The cases were filed by either the wife or mistress of the police officer. Such cases fall under violence against women and children (VAWC).

PNP spokesperson Bernard Banac said the increase in the number of complaints against policemen for not supporting their families is expected.

“Dati kasi wala gaanong lumalapit dahil maaaring naintindihan nila ‘yung sitwasyon ni mamang pulis na hindi naman talaga kayang magbigay ng supporta pero ngayon na tumaas ang suweldo ito na naglakasan ng loob na dapat supportahan mo din ang anak mo kasi meron kang anak dito. Yun naman ang nangyari ngayon,” he said.

Banac said the PNP does not tolerate unfaithfulness and infidelity among their ranks as it affects the performance of a police personnel.

“Well hanggat maaari ay talagang hindi natin pinapayagan ang mga ganung (pangangalunya) bagay dahil alaki ang nagiging epekto nito sa performance ng ating mga pulis at tayo po ay gumagalang at sinusuportahan ang konsepto ng pamilya at ang pag-aasawa, marriage ay isang sagradong bagay,” Banac said in an interview.

“Subalit may pagkakataon talaga na dahil sa hindi pagkakaunawaan ay nagkakahiwalay ‘yung mag-asawa or ‘yung pulis ay nakakakita ng panibagong pag-ibig so nakabuo na naman ng panibago kaya lang meron syang naiwan na responsibilidad, may anak sya doon sa naiwan nya,” he added.

Women and Children Protection Center director Brigadier General William Macavinta said that aside from non-support cases, they were also receiving complaints against policemen who were allegedly not providing enough suppor or were giving the same amount of support despite their doubled salaries.

Banac said the PNP is trying to negotiate with all parties involved for an amicable settlement to spare the erring officers from being sanctioned.

“Kapag naparusahan ‘yung pulis magsa-suffer din naman ‘yung kabilang pamilya. So hanggang maaari nagkakaron ng amicable settlement. ‘Yung naman po ang pinakamabisang paraan para both sides ay mabigyan ng supporta,” said Banac. (SunStar Philippines)
