Magalong reports toxic first week, twits detractors

BAGUIO City Mayor Benjamin Magalong reported a tumultuous first week in office as he twits detractors in focusing on trivial things.

During the flag-raising ceremonies Monday at City Hall, a seeming irked Magalong said while he was focusing on the big issues the city is facing, detractors have instead taken time to dwell on small things like grammatical errors.

“Yung iba they keep pulling things down, while we were looking at strategic solutions, may mga tao naman na tumutingin sa maliit na bagay, binibgyan pansin ang grammatical errors... binibigyan pansin ang alam niyo na.... I am pretty sure everyone is aware of that, the big question here, will these have an impact on the lives of the people of Baguio?” Magalong said.

The retired general then implored to city hall employees, department heads and the city council to have a change of mindsets.

“[We have to] Change our mindset, make sure everything we do will have strategic impact to the lives of the people of Baguio. Iwasan natin na pansinin ang mga bagay that will only end up in tabloids,” Magalong added.

Magalong vowed to continue to set a leadership that will be focused on addressing the issues now impacting the city as he reminded all employees to always work with ethics.

Last week, Magalong’s term was greeted with uncollected biodegradable garbage in compliance with the environment department’s order to halt operations at the decommissioned Irisan dump.

The DENR later lifted the order provided four conditions; clearing or hauling out of all accumulated store mixed waste material not later than July 31, installation and operationalization of all machines, collect only biodegradable waste and no storage of any residual waste outside the ERS facility.

The DENR official added the conversion of the closed Irisan dumpsite into an environment-friendly eco-park should be finished not later than December 31, 2019.

To recall, Magalong invited the officials of DENR to help Baguio assess the situation of the city and come up with more strategic solutions. On June 26, a site visit was made and DENR-CAR issued a notice of temporary closure order for processing of biodegradable waste at Irisan dumpsite effective June 26.
