Island Paints snags A+E Basketball Cup crown

ISLAND Paints completed its unbeaten campaign in the Architects+Engineers (A+E) Basketball Corporate Cup 2019 after winning the title with an 86-77 win over the Phoenix Building Systems in the championship game on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at the University of San Carlos gym.

Island Paints immediately dominated the game with a 25-11 lead, and was ahead by as much as 18 points in the opening period.

Down by 12 after halftime, Phoenix made it a single-digit deficit, 57-49, after three quarters of action.

Island Paints steadied the pace and held on to a nine-point lead at the final buzzer.

Ralph Catugas spearheaded Island Paints’ offense with 24 points, while Ryan Fabia had a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds with three blocked shots. Chester Hinagdanan chipped in 13 points, while Criz Matunog added 12.

Rodney Labang and Malvin Malicdem scored 16 points apiece to lead Phoenix. Lawrence Gayotin had 15, Armand Intong contributed 11 and Kurt Vanguardia added 10.

On the other hand, Filmon/Dormakaba grabbed third place honors after a pulsating 85-82 win over the Thinking Tools.

Ayi Armenion had a monstrous game for Filmon/Dormakaba with 32 points, 14 rebounds, five steals and one block.

Justin Aspacio chipped in 22 points.

Neil Tiempo led Thinking Tools with 26 points and 11 rebounds, while Joachim Rojas added 18 points. EKA
