Top cop's visit greeted with killing of ‘nanlaban'

POLICE operatives have killed a drug suspect in a raid in Purok Paradise 2, Cabalantian in Manticao, Misamis Oriental early Wednesday, July 10, the day the country's top cop visited the Police Regional Office-Northern Mindanao at Camp Alagar in Barangay Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City.

Through a court order, the Manticao town police and Provincial Drug Enforcement Unit (PDEU) raided the house of the suspect identified as Ariel Macas Jr. around 4:45 a.m.

The search warrant is for violation of the Dangerous Drugs Act (RA 9165).

However, authorities claimed the suspect fired his gun after sensing their presence, forcing them to retaliate.

The suspect was shot and did not get to the hospital alive while Police Corporal Sordilla was wounded on his fingers during the "shootout".

Investigators recovered the suspect's 38 caliber revolver.

The family could not believe that the suspect had a gun and was involved in the illegal drug activities. They will receive burial assistance through the capitol's Misamis Oriental Cares System (MisOr Cares).

Around three hours later, PNP Chief Oscar Albayalde led the groundbreaking of the daycare and breastfeeding center at PRO-Northern Mindanao. The regional police's renovated chapel was also inaugurated.

Speaking before the men and women of the PRO-Northern Mindanao, Albayalde reiterated the organization's internal cleansing program.

He said the move to renovate the chapel is a significant part for the transformation effort and upliftment of moral and spiritual value of the PNP members, while the organization continue to upgrade its capabilities and resources to better serve the community.

Albayalde also emphasized the success and accomplishments of the administration's war on drugs.

He compared the 245,000 arrested drug suspects with around 2.6 percent of drug personalities being killed in police operations.

"Merely 2.6 percent ang napatay compare sa naaresto natin. The president has already clarified na arestuhin ang suspect kung nanlaban decision na yan ng arresting officers," Albayalde said.

He also said the government has the human rights body that would look into the cases involving the deaths of "nanlaban" drug suspects.
