3 prominent Balingasag residents convicted over drug charges

A LOCAL court in Cagayan de Oro has convicted the three relatives of former Balingasag, Misamis Oriental town mayor Marietta Roa-Abogado for drug charges.

In a 17-page order issued on July 5 and signed by presiding judge Gil Bollozos of the Regional Trial Court, Branch 21, the court found the accused lawyer Michael Roa, John Rey Roa and Porferio Roa Jr. guilty of the drug charges filed against them.

Brothers Porferio and Michael were found guilty for violating section 11 (possession of dangerous drugs) of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act (RA 9165) while John Rey was found guilty for violating section 15 (Use of dangerous drugs).

Both Michael and Porferio were sentenced to suffer life imprisonment and have to pay a fine of P400,000 each, while John Rey was sentenced to undergo rehabilitation for six months, being a first offender.

"All accused are credited of the period that they are under preventive detention,"the order said.

The court also said the arrest warrant issued against another accused and John Rey's live-in partner Justine Mae Pundavela, who absconded, stands.

The three Roas' were arrested in a raid launched by the anti-narcotics agents in Northern Mindanao at the Roa's ancestral house in Barangay 5, Balingasag town, last November 10, 2016.

Agents of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Northern Mindanao seized around 40 grams of suspected shabu in the different rooms.

Authorities claimed that they have long been involved in the illegal drug trade.
