Duterte to 64 BOC execs: Resign or face raps

RESIGN or face charges, President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday, July 11, told Customs officials who have allegedly been embroiled in irregularities.

Duterte made the pronouncement in a speech delivered at Malacañan Palace Thursday.

"I was reading the dossier from all intelligence sources and I am... If I can dismiss them, I will be dismissing something like 64 Customs employees," the President said.

"It’s a simple case of --- you resign or I file charges. And that goes for all of us. We are workers of government and we serve the people, period," he added.

Duterte's announcement came after Malacañang announced his decision to place the erring BOC officials on "floating status" while they are still being investigated.

His latest remarks came amid his frustrations over the rampant corruption in government despite his resolve to get rid of erring public officials.

Duterte also revealed his plan to summon them to Malacañan Palace.

"In the meantime, that their case are being heard, in obedience of the rule on the right to be heard, I want them to be here in Malacañang. My view is that help me craft a new implementing rules of how not to rob a country properly. So I will be asking them to report here," he said.

"Most of them ‘yung nandiyan na, we will be filing charges, 64 of them. So at this early, they might be also learning the -- what’s going on here, and they are also hearing us," he added.

In a chance interview with Palace reporters, Duterte said he wants the erring officials out of the BOC to "prevent further damage to the government's interest."

Asked if he would drop his plan to file charges against BOC personnel who would heed his call for their resignation, the President said: "Well, that would be up to the Ombudsman. That is not my discretion. The Ombudsman is the prosecutor sa mga taga-gobyerno (of government workers) who are facing charges." (SunStar Philippines)
